Okavango tigerfish safari

Destination: Okavango River, Botswana
Season: September - December
Duration: 5 nights / 4 days fishing
Group Size: 4 - 6 anglers
Accommodation: Safari Lodge
Introduction
Each year as the flood waters recede along the Okavango River, trillions of baitfish are forced into the main stream. And as temperatures rise thousands of sharp-tooth catfish (Barbel) begin swimming upstream feeding on the baitfish. This incredible phenomenon is known as the Barbel Run. Even without a rod in hand it is an awesome site. However, as tigerfish join in on the feeding frenzy, it’s difficult not to have a rod in hand. Truly, this is world class!
Fishing
Casting to a Tigerfish feeding frenzy from a fully-carpeted boat in Africa is a fly fishing fantasy, and is lived out by a select few fly anglers each year in Botswana. Professional fly fishing guides with years of experience and knowledge on the Okavango river and the Barbel Run will get you into these situations.
Tigerfish are regarded by many as the hardest fighting freshwater fish and will test angler and tackle. From their ridiculously hard strikes to their acrobatic leaps they will stop your heart and get it going again! 8 weight rods are recommended to handle these fish and the large (up to 12 inch-long) flies you'll present these aggressive feeders.
Other species targeted on this safari are Nembwe Bream, Three-spot Bream, other Cichlids, Catfish and African Pike.
Accommodation
An exclusive 8 tent lodge located in the Shakawe region in the Western Pan Handle of the Okavango Delta, on the main Okavango channel. From the lodge we have the opportunity to fish the Okavango River as well as the numerous pristine lagoons situated close by.
The Lodge has 8 luxury spacious en suite meru tents sleeping 2 guests each. The tents have been specially designed with glass doors in the front of the tent. Each "tent" is on leadwood decks and all have views of the Okavango River.
Other Activities
Sundowner cruises and nature walks. The world renowned Moremi Game Reserve and Tsodilo Hills are close by and definitely worth visiting. This camp is an ornithologist’s, or any bird watcher’s, paradise. There are great opportunities to view rare birds such us the Pels Fishing Owl, White Backed Night Heron and African Skimmers amongst many.
